Our History

BUOC was founded in 1963 by eight students who wanted to get outside. They met with Professor Doctor Bergin Kessel, elected Allen Karindia to be their president, and led the first ever BUOC hike up Mt. Cardigan. In honor of this, BUOC still leads a trip up Mt. Cardigan every year.

The club continued to grow through the 70s and 80s. The leadership would host weekly dinners that were open to the public. These meals were a great place to plan trips and recruit new members. Providing our members with healthy, delicious food (albeit not at meetings anymore) is still important to the club.

As the outdoors became more accessible and commercialized, the Outing Club followed suit. We established a gear closet and secured reliable transportation through the university. We implemented a standardized process for organizing events and training our trip leaders. We formalized our trip guidelines in order to keep our trips safe and enjoyable.

All the while, our prices stayed low. Professional companies often charge their members between one and two hundred dollars. We will rarely charge more than thirty.

Going forward, we are going to continue to expand our gear closet and our online footprint. We are in the process of securing additional transportation from the University. At the end of the day, we will always do what we do best; taking students on adventures.
