What are some attributes of an e-board member?

The Outing Club’s e-board members usually have the urge to explore, the desire to lead and an appreciation for the outdoors. Our duty to the rest of the club also means that we must be responsible, organized and safety conscious. In the end though, we’re just a bunch of laid back kids who like to kick it in nature.

Who are we looking for?

We‚Äôre primarily looking for people with some experience leading and/or participating in a certain outdoor activity (kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, etc…). However, we‚Äôre happy to have anyone who‚Äôs committed and hard working – even if you‚Äôve never been camping before. You‚Äôll have to prove yourself by leading a trip before you can be an official e-board member, but you‚Äôll always be welcome to meetings to discuss the club‚Äôs past, present and future.

What will I be doing as an e-board member?

Most importantly, you’ll be making sure the club runs smoothly by helping to plan and execute weekly trips. E-board members also work on the clubs growth which entails doing advertising work, PR work, fundraising, finding permanent transportation, and even building a cabin.

How much of a time commitment is it?

It’s as much of a commitment as you want it to be. We have meetings for a total of 2-4 hours/week. Any extra time spent on Outing Club stuff depends on your position and whether or not you’re leading a trip over the weekend.

What are some of the benefits?

Facial hair and eating massive quantities of SPAM…but not really. You get access to our gear closet for one. Also, if you plan and lead a trip your expenses are covered by the club on said trip. And last but not least, you get to be part of one of the coolest, up-and-coming clubs on campus – all while meeting awesome new people and spending loads of time outdoors.

How much fun will I have?

So much fun that you’ll probably quit school to marry a Sasquatch and live in the woods like Thoreau…That or you’ll just enjoy it a normal amount and be able to tell your friends about all the incredible adventures you’ve been on.

When and where are the meetings?
Every Monday at 8:00pm in CAS 20-B! Come say hi.

Are there dues to be in the OC?
To join us on trips, the only payment you’ll need to make is to cover the costs of the adventure: transportation, food, rental equipment. If you’d like to receive the benefits of official membership, the dues are $20 per semester and $30 for the year.

How much does the average trip cost?
Somewhere between $10-40. The OC is partially funded by BU, so sometimes they are free!

Do I need to have experience to go on a trip?
Our trips vary in difficulty level, but most will be perfect for anyone.

Do I need any equipment?
The BUOC has a stock of extra backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, and other outdoor paraphernalia that you can rent for a small fee. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, local stores like EMS rent equipment at reasonable prices.

How do I become a member?
Everyone is welcome to join us on outings; you don’t need to be an official member. BUT, if you want priority on trips, half-off gear rentals, $10 off on trips, and¬†a discount to a subscription to MetroRock, become an official member today!

If I’m part of the BUOC, is there a required number of trips I must go on?
You can attend as many or as few Outing Club events as you’d like!

How many trips per semester are offered?
We try to have at least one event every weekend, if not more. We had over 15 events so far in Fall 2011 and a total of more than 350 participants!

What is the attendance on BUOC trips?
Our largest camping trips are around 25 people, but the limiting factor is usually transportation. The more difficult backpacking trips are usually around 10-12 people. We will occasionally host large events (such as kayaking on the Charles) within walking distance of Boston that can reach 100+ people.

If I’m interested in a trip how do I sign up?
Check out our trip sign-ups on our website or just send us an email and let us know! The sooner we know you’re interested, the better chance you have of being able to participate. You’ll also have to attend a pre-departure meeting in the week before the event.

Can I still attend a trip/be part of the outing club if I can’t attend a meeting?
Yes! While we would really love for you to come to our weekly meetings (and our predeparture meetings for trips) if you can’t attend you can still come with us on trips. We will send you emails with the information instead.

Where does the BUOC usually go?
Our range is usually: Boston Metropolitan area, Coastal and Central Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut. We’ve even been to Maine!

Can I borrow BUOC equipment for a trip I’m planning?
Yes you can, though we give priority to gear needed for BUOC events. The good thing is anyone can plan a BUOC event. All you need to do is post the trip on our message board so that our other members are able to come along! Rental Rates are posted for non-members and official members.
