What: Hey BUOC! Want to lead trips through the Outing Club? Come on Part 1 of trip leader training this weekend (2/6-2/7). We will be going for a hike Saturday afternoon up Mt. Isreal so be sure to bring proper hiking attire. After the hike we will head to our campground to teach trip leader fundamentals and unwind for the night. Sunday morning the plan is to put everything we’ve learned together to plan your first trip! Don’t worry about missing the Super Bowl Sunday, we are going to make it back to Boston with plenty of time to spare. Part 2 of the training will be Wednesday night (2/10) from 6:45-8pm in SAR 101. This training segment will go over the technological side of leading trips so bring you laptop.

Where/When: We will meet in the parking lot behind CAS and Marsh Plaza Saturday morning (2/6) at 8am. From there we will be driving directly to Mt. Isreal, NH for a 4 mile hike so be sure to pack a lunch! After the hike we will be staying at Mead Base Campground in Sandwich, NH. Sunday afternoon we will head back to Boston. 

Price: $20 Season Pass Holders and $30 for Non-Pass Holders

Packing List (* means we can provide it):

  • 2 water bottles
  • Snacks
  • Tupperware/bowl with a spoon
  • Waterproof hiking boots (above the ankle)

Mount Moosilauke Day Hike! (2/13)

Come join the Outing Club for a fun winter hike! Mount Moosilauke has amazing views of the surrounding White Mountains and Vermont.

What: A day hike in New Hampshire

Cost: $10 for pass-holders/$20 for non-pass holders. This covers transportation and some snacks!

When: Saturday, February 13th. We’ll leave Boston around 7:30 am and return in the evening.

Difficulty: Winter hiking is more challenging than summer hiking.

What to Bring:

  • Snacks and a lunch
  • Water
  • Hiking boots
  • Extra socks
  • Winter clothing (hats, scarves, gloves, etc)
  • Lots of layers (no cotton!)

Want to get out of the city for a day and get some exercise outdoors? Join us for a great day hike in NH offering amazing winter views of the NH lake district! West Rattlesnake is considered a family friendly hike but will be more challenging in the winter conditions so be prepared!

What: An awesome day hike offering great views of the lake district in NH!

Cost: $10 for BUOC Season Pass Holders/ $20 for non-pass holders. Covers transportation/some snacks.

When: Saturday, February 6th. Leave Boston around 8am and return by evening.

We are still looking for drivers so email popovaj@bu.edu (we will cover your trip cost and gas!!!)

Come enjoy the wintry nature on a beautiful and easy day hike just outside of Boston at Blue Hills!!

We’re meeting up at Marsh Plaza at 9:45am and will return approximately at 3:00pm. The only cost is Uber transportation to and from Blue Hills.

 

Difficulty: Easy

 

Things to bring:

Warm Cloth

Waterproof shoes (preferably hiking boots), microspikes may help! Anything that has traction and would make hiking in the snow easier!

Lunch! We’ll be stopping around noon to have lunch at Houghton Pond.

Lots and lots of water!

Blue Hills Ski Trip (1/31)

Come ski or board with us just south of Boston! Blue Hills Ski Area is a great place to learn how to ski or board or just get some shredding in without sacrificing your weekend or your wallet. All are welcome on this trip: No ski or snowboard experience required but you are more than welcome to hit up the black diamonds if that’s more your type.

When – Sunday January 31st (11am-7pm)

Where – Blue Hills Ski Area (4001 Washington St. Canton, MA 02021)

Difficulty – No skiing or snowboarding experience necessary!

Attendance : 20 – 30 people

Cost – 30$ lift ticket, 20$ estimated cost for uber or lyft transportation. Ski or snowboard gear $20 if you do not own your own gear (skis or board, boots; poles for skiers). Optional: Helmet $7, 75 min group lesson $27.

Food-Bring your own snacks, lunch and other food available for purchase

Transportation – Uber, lyft, and/or drivers

Required gear

Come let out some finals week stress at Boston Paintball in Chelsea! Enjoy intense paintball action all over the largest indoor playing field on the East Coast. Be ready to mingle with fellow Outing Club members as well as our hommies from the BU Billiards Club.

[11/21] Mineral Collecting

The BUOC has gotten in contact with EarthDance, a retreat dance company with a retired manganese/rhodonite mine on its property. It was closed down 75 years ago and the public are welcome to get a tour from their Mineral Coordinator and have free range of tailing areas (where they dumped the minerals and stones they couldn’t profit off of) to explore and take home whatever they find! Here are the details:

WHAT: Gem collecting at the retired Anson G. Betts Mine

WHEN: Saturday, November 21st (leave BU 8:30am and return to BU at 5pm)

WHERE: 262 Prospect St, Plainfield, MA 01070

HOW: Because we will be collecting in the tailing areas, there is very little to no digging required. In some areas, there are minerals and rocks everywhere, it’s just a matter of cracking them open. Many of the minerals have oxidized over time causing the rocks to blacken on the outside and it only takes a whack of a hammer to reveal the surprises inside.

WHAT TO BRING: Everyone collecting on the sight must be wearing safety goggles as we will be using hammers to crack open rocks. The more hammers the better! If you have a hammer, your roommate has a hammer and your aunt’s labradoodle has a hammer, bring all three! The more hammers we have, the more people can find cool things. We will be labeling and taping borrowed hammers and goggles to ensure that they are all returned to their respective owners.

HOW MUCH: The price for this trip will be between $15-$20 depending on how many people sign up and how many drivers we have. This price includes EarthDance’s $10 donation fee for each person collecting.

WHAT WE CAN FIND: Rhodonite (Massachusetts state gemstone!), Rhodochrosite, Spessartine Garnets, Tephroite, Magnetite, Pyrite, Chalcopyrite, and Almandine Garnets.

Pay for the class upfront and I will reimburse you in cash at the event!

 

Who wants to learn how to belay at the FitRec Rock Wall!?!?! Thursday 11/19, FitRec will be holding a private belay classes for Outing Club members! After the class you will have all the knowledge you need to take the belay certification test during open rec hours and use the top ropes at the wall! You do not need any climbing experience or gear. Rock shoes, harnesses, and belay devices will be provided.

When – Thursday 11/19 from 5:30-7

Where – BU FitRec Rock Wall 

Difficulty – No experience is required

Cost – FREE for season pass holders!!

$10 non-season pass holder

What: Excited about the new Bond Movie?!?! Celebrate by Hiking the Bonds (11/20-11/22) on a 3 day and 2 night traverse!  This hike includes three 4,000 footers in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire! Sign-ups will go live at 2:00 pm on Wednesday (11/18)! Check this page for the link.

Where/When: We will depart from the parking lot behind CAS at 1:00 on Friday aiming to hike to our campsite by 7 pm.  We will hike the up the traverse during the day on Saturday and hike back down Sunday.  We will be back before 5 pm on Sunday (11/22).

Difficulty: Difficult, 20+ miles… this is not a hike to take lightly, backpacking experience required!

Price: $30 for season pass holders, $40 for non-season pass holders, free for drivers!

Mt. Liberty Day Hike [11/14]

Join us for a fantastic/dynamite/killer day of hiking in the White Mountains! We plan to hike up Mt. Liberty, which offers greats views of Franconia Ridge at the top (4,459 feet). The hike is moderate-difficult and roundtrip is 8.2 miles.
